This letter is for the purpose of applying to the Research Master´s Degree Programme in Social Sciences at the University of XXXXXXX. My academic background and experiences have prepared me for this field of study. I have graduated from the Psychology Faculty of Istanbul University, where I was among the first class of 10 students in 2009. Because of my interest in Clinical Psychology, I have done some internships in this field. I volunteered at Bakirkoy Mental and Neurological Disorders Hospital (one of the biggest hospitals in Turkey) for a year, and interned at La Paix Hospital in France for 3 months. Additionally I have had clinical practice in two of the most important medical faculties (Cerrahpasa & Capa Faculties) thanks to the connections of my university.


After I received my degree, I worked for a year with learning-disabled and autistic children and two years with prisoners as a staff member of the Turkish Ministry Of Justice. During these three years, I encountered many pathological cases. As a result I decided to consider a master’s degree in clinical psychology. Having all these experiences and being passionate about my job, I was clearly focused on my newly chosen academic path.

During my first year working with learning-disabled children, I had the chance to observe their parents as well. Both their children’s conditions and the socio-economic and socio-cultural conditions brought on by said children’s conditions were affecting the adults in many ways. I had the chance to observe the causes of their condition. I also argued with my professors about my concerns multiple times. Later on, I worked directly with troubled adults in jails, Bakirkoy Hospital and in La Paix. These were unique, precious opportunities both for my academic career and practical experience. Therefore I feel much more ready now to study adult cases.


Information I already knew and had come across about the achievements in German institutions helped me during that time. Istanbul University and German universities recognize each other’s research, which means that my further academic studies would ensure good job opportunities. All of these factors have persuaded me to pursue my graduate studies in Germany.




Studying the psychopathology of adults has been my primary pursuit for a long time. After the years I spent at the Ministry Of Justice, this subject became much more interesting to me. From now on I would like to deepen my knowledge and practice in that field with the help of your kind efforts. It would also enable my dream of being a lecturer myself. Naturally, improving my second foreign language would be an incontestable plus for my career. Certainly, I could easily improve my German proficiency in Nordrhein-Westfalen, where my grandparents live. Being among familiar faces would help me solve a lot of problems like housing, social adaptation etc. and allow me to focus on my studies more easily.


I would like to help people in my own language, because I believe that my cultural understanding would be an asset, since I could understand my own cultural aspects and would be able to master the subject much more easily than if I was working with a different population. I have always wanted to live my life in my own country, in order to serve people more easily and become more successful at my job. In Nordrhein-Westfalen, I would always have my own cultural links and never feel lost until I finish my master’s degree and return to Turkey.


I wish I had a more direct way of showing my eagerness about the programme. In any case, I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
